Will your Business be Closed for Christmas?
Many of us like to shut up shop over the Christmas period to enjoy some time with our friends and families. While we spare a thought for those who have to work over the holidays (including us if there’s an emergency!) we’re also busy advising business personnel and commercial property owners of what they can do to eliminate criminal behaviour around their premises at this time of year.
Unfortunately, criminals and opportunists don’t stop breaking into properties and causing havoc just because it’s Christmas. In fact, as our background in the criminal justice system has taught us, many consider this a prime time to enter premises because they know, more often than not, they’ll be empty.
So what can you do to prevent your business premises being targeted this Christmas?
Prepare Installed Security Systems
Setting your intruder alarm and checking your CCTV is in good working order may seem like obvious suggestions, but with the excitement of holidays looming, common sense often goes out the window and it can be easy to overlook preparing your security systems.
Make sure your keyholders and first ports of call are available over the Christmas period. If your system sends your keyholders an SMS or pop-up notification when your security has been breached, make sure whoever is set to receive these messages will always be in in an area with WiFi/4G/3G and good signal coverage. If that’s not possible, we suggest you change who the notifications are sent to, so someone is notified straight away should an incident take place.
Changing Passwords and Passcodes
Now’s also a great time to change any passcodes and passwords associated with your security systems, safes, vaults and any other equipment that requires login information. Once you’ve changed the details, keep them to yourself and only share them with keyholders and personnel who may need access over the holiday period.
Don’t have a Security System? No Problem
Although we advise that all business premises should have a security system in place, we understand the are some who haven’t. If your business fits into this category, there are still things you can do to protect your property and assets.
Timer switches are great for preventing intruders; they’re also cheap and easy to use. Attach timer switches to lights, radios, TVs or any other device you have in your workplace that can be turned on and off throughout the Christmas period to fool potential intruders that someone might be inside.
Installing sensor lights above doors and large windows is another cheap and easy way to prevent crime. They work by illuminating the space around the light whenever someone passes by it. This will put off many intruders as they won’t want to be seen breaking into a property.
If you have any cash inside the building, make sure you lock it up in a safe, and make sure the safe is hidden. There’s no need to tempt intruders into your premises with a safe on display!
Don’t forget your outhouses, gates and fences when you lock up for Christmas. Choose good quality padlocks and chains where necessary, and make sure everything outside is taken inside and hidden from view.
