Intruder Alarms and Pets

Locked and Secure's jack russellsWe regularly meet customers with family pets who want their home to be alarmed. Although at first you might think it will be pretty difficult with a pet roaming around while you’re out, it’s certainly not impossible. It just takes a bit of thinking about and sometimes a little restriction for your favourite housemate!

Smudge the catWe normally install Pyronix systems, which have pet-tolerant detectors in their range. These rely on the pet being under 20kg (generally OK for a cat!) and not being able to get within 2 meters of the detector. Of course cats like to jump, so they can be tricky contenders even for pet-tolerant and pet-immune devices. This is where experience and discussions are important, so we can install a system your cat shouldn’t be able to reach!

Mia the jack russellSome smaller breeds of dogs can get along with the pet-tolerant detectors. It all depends on their weight and their interest and ability, or lack of, to jump onto sideboards and kitchen worktops. We set up a camera in our kitchen at home so we can watch our dogs when we leave the house. We found out Mia, the white Jack Russell, gets on a chair and then onto the dining room table every day to check for left over breakfast, so please don’t be surprised if you dog still triggers the alarm!

Perimeter detection on doors and windows could be the answer for some homes. These detectors would need to be placed in rooms your pets are able to access, but this can be a costly alternative and therefore might make your alarm system slightly more expensive than you might have expected.

If you have larger pets, the best option is to restrict them to one or two rooms of the property when you are out. By ensuring the system is zoned properly, they’ll be unable to get near any detectors so won’t be able to trigger them.

Our pets are important members of the family and need to be protected just as much as our property. What ever your pet; big…
